Abstract

These Regulations concern measures for the achievement of environmental objectives for groundwater established by Article 4(1)(b) of Directive 2000/60/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council and give effect to the requirements of Directive 2006/118/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council. These measures, made in accordance with EC legislation, among other things: (a) prevent or limit the input of pollutants into groundwater; (b) protect, enhance and restore all bodies of groundwater and ensure a balance between abstraction and recharge of groundwater; (c) require the reversal of any significant and sustained upward trend in the concentration of any pollutant resulting from the impact of human activity; (d) determine groundwater quantitative status and establish criteria and procedures for assessing groundwater chemical status; (e) lay down of rules for the presentation and reporting of groundwater monitoring results, trend assessments and the classification of quantitative status and chemical status of groundwater bodies.
