Abstract

This Law aims to guarantee effective equality of rights and duties between men and women, with a view to eliminating all forms of discrimination and creating the same opportunities, namely with regard to political participation and the exercise of positions of decision, aiming to achieve a more just, democratic and balanced society. It applies throughout the national territory and is binding on all public entities. Private entities are encouraged to promote gender equality, under the terms of this Law. Parity between men and women includes the adoption of all measures aimed at eliminating any distinction, exclusion or limitation based on sex, which have the consequence or purpose of compromising or preventing the recognition, enjoyment or exercise of rights relating to political participation and decision-making. Parity of treatment includes, namely: a) absence of any types of discrimination based on sex, in particular with regard to political participation and access to and exercise of decision-making positions; b) mandatory constitution of lists for the National Assembly, Regional Legislative Assembly and local authorities, other elective bodies, as well as decision-making positions, on an equal basis, in order to guarantee the effective equality of participation between men and women; c) right to benefit of related rights and privileges, and don't suffer any kind of discrimination based on sex due to the exercise of rights recognized by the Constitution and other laws of the Republic.
