Abstract

This Resolution consisting of 9 articles aims at taking into consideration the environmental sensitivity of the Egyptian seaports under the environmental principles, rules, and standards of their location and the extent of their proximity to residential or tourist areas or natural reserves and any other area that has environmental sensitivity, according to the provisions of Environmental Law No. 4 of 1994 as follows (i) ports with high environmental sensitivity; (ii) ports with low environmental sensitivity. All Egyptian seaports are obligated to comply with the environmental standards and requirements related to the handling and use of coal or petroleum (art.2). Ports with high environmental sensitivity have to respect the requirements provided in article 3 about the mechanism for unloading and storing coal. Article 4 states that permits for shipping, unloading, handling, storage, and transportation are required to obtain the necessary environmental approvals. It is necessary for practicing an activity in seaports concerning coal to submit a study regarding their environmental conditions (art.5). Joint committees are formed to review the position of all existing activities in the seaports where coal is received, to review the controls and conditions related to the use of coal (art.6).
