An Act to promote efficiency and competition in the electricity supply industry, to provide for a safe and efficient system of electricity generation, transmission, distribution and supply, to provide for the safety of electrical installations, equipment and appliances, to enforce proper standards in the performance of electrical work, to protect the interests of consumers of electricity and for related purposes.

Abstract

This Act provides for the establishment of the office of the Regulator. The Regulator’s functions, powers and objectives include: administer the licensing system for electricity entities; monitor and regulate technical standards in the electricity supply industry; promote efficiency and competition in the electricity supply industry; and establish and maintain a safe and efficient system of electricity generation, transmission, distribution and supply. The Regulator must also issue the Tasmanian Electricity Code which shall provide for matters specified in the Act.
