Entry into force notes: The Act shall come into force on a date to be established by the President by Proclamation.

Abstract: This Act provides rules for the supply, generation, transmission, distribution, trading and the import and export of electricity and establishes a National Energy Regulator. The objects of the Act, among other things, are to achieve efficient and sustainable supply of electricity, to protect needs and interests of electricity consumers, to facilitate the access to electricity, to promote the use of alternative sources of energy and to achieve energy efficiency. The National Energy Regulator shall be the "custodian and enforcer" of the regulatory framework provided for in this Act. The Regulator shall issue licences for the operation of generation, transmission and distribution facilities, regulate prices, mediate in disputes, act as a registrar, etc. The Regulator shall establish advisory, consumer and end user forums.
