The Directive prescribes rules relative to handling, processing and packing and placing on the market of bivalve molluscs defined in article 1. Live bivalve molluscs may only placed on the market if they are processed and packed in accordance with rules laid down in this Directive. Article 4 classified production areas, i.e. areas where molluscs may be collected and directly brought to the market for human consumption, areas where molluscs shall be collected and cleaned before being placed on the market and areas where molluscs may be collected but not be placed on the market before they have been re-planted on breeding grounds for at least 2 months. Chapter III contains health requirements regarding gathering and transport of molluscs from the production area to other areas for further cultivation or cleaning.
