Abstract

This Directive lays down some amendments and addenda to Directive 2002/59/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council establishing a Community vessel traffic monitoring and information system. In particular, it lays down new provisions concerning the use of automatic identification systems by fishing vessels, the use of systems for the long-range identification and tracking of ships and measures to be implemented in the event of risks posed by the presence of ice. Furthermore, the Directive provides for the establishment of maritime information management systems, at national and local level, to process the information referred to in these provisions.
