Abstract

These Rules regulate the importation of plants, plant products and other articles that can potentially introduce infectious plant diseases and pests in Bangladesh. Rule 3 prohibits introduction in Bangladesh of any plant or plant product that may be a source or medium of infective diseases or noxious weeds and other pests, without a special permit from the Director of the Plant Protection Office of the Ministry of Agriculture. Importers of plants or plant products shall notify the Director of Plant Quarantine on arrival at any port or other point of entry of plants and plant products (rule 6). A phytosanitary certificate of the country of origin (rule 8) shall accompany all plants and plant products. All plants imported shall be free of sand, soil, and earth and packed in packing material that has been treated in such a way that it is free from pests and diseases (rules 9 and 10). Rule 13 allows importation of plants and plant products for scientific purposes. Rules 14 to 28y set out restrictions on the importation of various crops and articles, including citrus plants, various kinds of vegetables, coconut, cotton, rice, wheat, forest tree seeds, and food grain. The last part of these Rules deals with inspection and charges. (36 articles completed by a Schedule containing forms)
