Abstract It is hereby established the National Park of Sila which shall comprise the two areas “Sila Grande” and “Sila Piccola”. The boundaries of the Park are defined in the cartography attached to this Decree. In addition, the National Park of Sila Institution is set up under article 1 (2). The Institution shall be subject to the surveillance of the Ministry of the Environment. Annex A lays down particular provisions for the protection of the National Park, which is first of all divided into two zones of different protection levels. Article 2 of the Annex defines the aims pursued by the creation of the Park, including in particular: 1) conservation of fauna and flora; 2) landscape preservation; 3) maintenance and development of traditional agricultural and sylvo-pastoral activities; 4) promotion of biological production; 5) forest preservation; 6) protection and restoration of the hydrogeological balance. Article 3 prohibits the performance of certain activities, such as: a) capturing of animal species; b) gathering of spontaneous flora; c) introduction of non autochthonous fauna and flora species; d) quarrying. Such prohibitions shall not prejudice special authorizations issued by the competent authority for scientific research purposes in accordance with articles 6 to 9.
