Abstract

The Decree provides for the determination of regional identities of flora and fauna as an attempt to identify certain regions from the uniqueness and diversity of certain species of plants and animals native to, or typical of, the regions concerned, so that the special characteristics of these can be described. The aims of determining such regional identities are: to promote the sense if sharing the ownership of natural wealth; to increase public awareness; to promote regional tourism; and to develop regional industries. The species serving as regional identities are those which: are original species in the region concerned; have typical value of utilization by local communities; have aesthetic value; are scarce or limitedly distributed; etc. The regional identities of flora and fauna which have been determined are to be developed and safeguarded by regional administrations and local communities.
