The aims of determining such regional identities are: to promote the sense if sharing the ownership of natural wealth; to increase public awareness; to promote regional tourism; and to develop regional industries. The species serving as regional identities are those which: are original species in the region concerned; have typical value of utilization by local communities; have aesthetic value; are scarce or limitedly distributed; etc. The regional identities of flora and fauna which have been determined are to be developed and safeguarded by regional administrations and local communities.
