This Decree, consisting of 8 articles, creates the Wildlife Sanctuary of the Alcatrazes Archipelago on the Northern coast of the State of São Paulo, within the São Sebastião Municipality. The Sanctuary objectives aims at preserving: the unique natural environments created by the association of geological, geomorphological and marine currents characteristics; the biological diversity, including island, endemic, endangered or migratory species that use the area for food, reproduction and shelter; and the environmental goods and services provided by marine ecosystems, in order to reconcile the interests of natural heritage conservation with those of national sovereignty. Within the Wildlife Sanctuary of the Alcatrazes Archipelago, the following activities are guaranteed: navigation; actions necessary to safeguard human life at sea; safety of waterway traffic; and prevention of marine pollution by ships and platforms.
