Abstract This Decree consisting of 43 articles aims at specifying the fundamentals of hazardous waste management under the Law of Integrated Solid Waste Management. This includes (i) a characterization and a classification of these wastes; (ii) the establishment of an appropriate monitoring and controlling system to control the operations of generation, sorting, collection, transport, storage, recovery, treatment, and final disposal of hazardous wastes, aiming at minimizing the negative impacts on the environment. Non-hazardous, radioactive, and infectious waste are exempted from the provisions of this Decree. The Ministry of Environment shall prepare and update a national inventory of hazardous wastes from all its sources of generation (art.7). Article 8 encourages reducing the generation of hazardous wastes by adopting integrated environmental management, using less harmful raw materials such as environmentally friendly alternatives, and using the best available techniques. Each hazardous waste generator must declare about his activity by filling out the waste data survey (art.9) and is obliged to label the containers designed for the storage of hazardous waste (art.11).
