Abstract This Decree, composed of 12 articles and 1 Annex, regulates the creation, at the owner’s initiative, of Natural Heritage Private Protected Areas ("Reservas Particulares do Patrimônio Natural"). It establishes the competence of the Brazilian Institute for Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA), to authorize the creation of any of the above mentioned private protected areas. It defines the procedures necessary for the owner to ask for the recognition of part of or the entire property as a Natural Heritage Private Protected Area. It also specifies the duties and responsibilities for the owner, the legal regime applicable to those protected areas and the monitoring competences of IBAMA.
