Abstract This Decree, approves the Regulation for Radioactive Material Transport. This Regulation, consisting of 95 articles divided into nine Chapters and nine Annexes, sets forth the rules for the transport of radioactive material with a view to radiological protection and safety of people, goods and the environment against the harmful effects of ionizing radiation, comprising: Specifications on the containment system for radioactive material; and Control of external radiation levels. It applies to: a) Transport by land, water or air, including transport incidentally associated with the use of radioactive material; b) Design, manufacture, testing and maintenance of packaging; c) Preparation, dispatch, handling, loading, storage in transit and receipt at the final destination of the packaging; d) Transport of empty packaging, which encloses radioactive material. The Regulation does not apply to: a) The transport of radioactive material that takes place inside nuclear or radioactive plants; b) Radioactive material implanted or incorporated into a living person or animal for diagnostic or treatment purposes; and c) Radioactive material in consumer products approved by law.
