Abstract

This Decree promulgates the accession of Brazil to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification in those Countries Experiencing Serious Drought and/or Desertification, Particularly in Africa (UNCCD). This Convention aims to combat desertification and mitigate the effects of drought in countries affected by severe drought and/or desertification, through the adoption of effective measures at all levels, supported by international cooperation and partnership, within the framework of an integrated approach, consistent with Agenda 21, which aims to contribute to achieving sustainable development in the affected areas. Achieving this objective will require the application, in affected areas, of long-term integrated strategies based simultaneously on increasing land productivity and on the rehabilitation, conservation and sustainable management of land and water resources, with a view to improving living conditions , particularly at the level of local communities.
