Abstract This Decree-Law, consisting of 39 articles divided into five Chapters and three Annexes, establishes the legal regime for the production of sugar cane brandy in Cape Verde, traditionally known as grogu/grogue. It applies to all production and marketing activities of this brandy, produced exclusively from sugarcane. It does not apply to the production of the following beverages, which is subject to regulation by its own law: a) production of brandy with raw material other than sugar cane; b) production of other spirituous beverages resulting from the mixing of sugar cane spirit with other substances or from mixtures of two or more spirit drinks. The sugarcane spirit must present the quality parameters set out in Annex I. In sugar cane brandy the maximum permissible copper content is 5 mg/l of brandy and of methanol is 20 mg/100 ml of anhydrous alcohol.
