Abstract

New plant varieties of rice, maize, tomato, peanut, soybean, tea, coffee, orange and pineapples and others (see attached list) must be tested by agencies appointed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, before being mass-produced, imported or traded. Testing includes breeding tests (undergone directly by the breeder under certain regulations), DUS tests (testing distinctness, uniformity and stability of the new variety), VCU tests (for value of cultivation and use of new variety, meaning that the productivity is 10%higher than for original variety, better quality and agronomic properties)). Tested and approved varieties shall be registered and granted temporary recognition, allowing a trial production in selected areas. After trial production has been evaluated and approved of, an official recognition shall be granted. New varieties shall be renamed so to not arise any confusion with original or similar ones.
