Abstract This Act provides rules for the design, construction and operation of dams so as to reduce the hazard that may be caused by a dam. The provisions of this Act also apply to flood embankments and dams in watercourses. The Act also specifies other legislation that, in part, applies to dams and related structures. The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry shall be the principle authority for purposes of this Act. The Act, among other things provides for: the planning, design and construction, maintenance, operation and monitoring of a dam; classification of dams and related dam break hazard analysis and emergency action plan; emergency preparedness and action in the event of accidents; and inspections.
