Abstract

This Regulation aims at the promotion of the fishing industry and the development of aquaculture through the multiannual guidance programme and the projects to be drawn up by the Member States. The programme must specify the methods, measures and facilities or resources to be used in order to achieve: 1) as for the fishing sector, a satisfactory balance between the fishing capacity and the stocks available; 2) as far as aquaculture is concerned, a sustainable and economically profitable volume of production of fish, crustaceans or molluscs. To be eligible for aid from the Fund, the projects must satisfy specific requirements and conditions laid down in articles 8 and 9. Priority consideration shall be given to the projects concerning particular aspects in matter of construction or modernization of fishing vessels and aquaculture (i.e. replacement of old or irreparably damaged vessels, projects for the rational use of fuel or fuel-saving types of fishing, development of specific sectors, retraining of fishermen, etc.). The procedure for the examination of projects by the Commission is established by article 12. The Regulation states the percentage of the aid granted by the Fund and the contribution to be paid by the beneficiary. Further financial and general provisions are provided for by articles 14 to 25.
