Abstract

In view of the fact that biological and genetic diversity in agriculture is essential to the sustainable development of agricultural production and of rural areas, the present Regulation establishes measures applicable to the conservation, characterization, collection and utilization of genetic resources, so as to achieve the aims pursued by the common agricultural policy within the Community. Such measures are encompassed in a Community programme for the period 2004-2006, which covers plant, microbial and animal genetic resources which are or could be used in agriculture. The Community programme shall comprise targeted action, concerted actions and accompanying actions, as specified in Articles 5, 6 and 7.
