Subject Sea Keyword Maritime zone Continental shelf Sovereignty Geographical area Asia, Europe, Europe and Central Asia, European Union Countries, Mediterranean, Middle East, Western Asia Abstract This Law provides for the exploration and exploitation of the continental shelf of the Republic of Cyprus. The Law defines the continental shelf as the seabed and subsoil of the submarine areas adjacent to the coast of the Republic, but beyond the territorial waters, where the depth of the superjacent waters admits of the exploitation of the natural resources of the said areas; provided that, in relation to any State whose coasts lie opposite those of the Republic, the outer boundary of the continental shelf shall, unless otherwise agreed between the Republic and that State, in no case extend beyond the median line. "Territorial waters" in this Law, means the zone delimited by section two (2) of the Territorial waters Law (No. 45/64). The Law provides for the application of Laws to the continental shelf, contains provisions on the prohibition to interfere with the exploitation of the continental shelf, and establishes penalties to persons acting in contravention of the provisions of this Law.
