Abstract

The Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC) at its 101st meeting in Victoria, B.C., Canada, amended Resolution C-21-06, focusing on conservation measures for shark species, particularly the silky shark (Carcharhinus falciformis), for 2024 and 2025. The resolution addresses concerns about compliance with the Antigua Convention and emphasizes the need for enhanced monitoring and conservation measures for silky sharks due to their frequent bycatch. It establishes various measures, including a prohibition on retaining, transshipping, or landing silky sharks caught by purse-seine vessels, limits on bycatch for longline vessels, and requirements for data reporting and research to improve understanding and conservation efforts. The resolution also mandates a long-term sampling program in Central America to enhance data collection on silky shark stocks and calls for measures to avoid fishing in silky shark pupping areas. Additionally, it introduces a provisional closure period for the use of steel leaders in certain fisheries, with a commitment to review and adjust these measures based on scientific analysis and progress evaluations in subsequent years.
