Country/Territory Document type Regulation Date 2009 Source FAO, FAOLEX Subject Fisheries Keyword Marine fisheries Offences/penalties Fishery management and conservation High seas Abstract This Conservation and Management Measure of the Western Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC), for purposes of protection of highly migratory species, and in particular tuna species, and the protection of data buoys, requires Contracting Members and Cooperating non-Members (CCM's) to prohibit their fishing vessels from fishing within one nautical mile of or interacting with a data buoy in the high seas of the Convention Area or from taking on board a data buoy unless specifically authorized or requested to do so by the Member or owner responsible for that buoy. Other measures to protect data buoys are specified. Fishing activities inconsistent with the prohibitions shall be deemed fishing activities that undermine the WCPF Convention and WCPFC conservation and management measures and shall constitute a serious violation in accordance with Article 25 of the Convention.
