Country/Territory Document type Regulation Date 2019 Source FAO, FAOLEX Subject Environment gen., Fisheries, Sea Keyword Marine pollution Marine fisheries Fishing gear/fishing method Equipment Fishing vessel International relations/cooperation Fishery management and conservation Waste disposal Ecosystem preservation Abstract This Measure of the Commission of the South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organisation (SPRFMO), in particular to protect the marine ecosystem, particularly ecosystems with long recovery times following disturbance, from significant adverse impact of unregulated and unmanaged fishing practices, introduces obligations for Member and CNCPs to ensure that its fishing vessels shall make all reasonable efforts to combat, minimise and eliminate abandoned, lost or otherwise discarded fishing gear (ALDFG). The vessels shall, where possible have on board to equipment for the retrieving of ALDFG. The CMM introduces various notification duties in relation with lost or abandoned gear. Members states and CNCPs shall prohibit their vessels to dump plastics into marine waters. Members and CNCPs are also encouraged to, among other things, ensure that fishing vessels flying their flag and operating within the SPRFMO Convention Area inform their flag State of ports in countries that are Party to the annexes of MARPOL which do not have adequate port reception facilities for MARPOL wastes.
