The objective of the CMM is to ensure the long-term conservation and sustainable use of deep sea fishery resources and to protect vulnerable marine ecosystems (VMEs) from significant adverse impacts of bottom fishing, applying the precautionary and ecosystem approaches. The CMM sets out procedures for assessing proposed bottom fishing activities, establishing bottom fishing management areas, monitoring and controlling bottom fishing activities, reporting encounters with potential VMEs, ensuring observer coverage and electronic monitoring, registering known VMEs, and reviewing the CMM.
