Abstract This Complementary Law, consisting of 35 articles and six Annexes, creates the State Institution for the Environment and Water Resources (IEMA). It establishes composition, duties and responsibilities of IEMA entitled to: plan, coordinate, execute, supervise and control the activities related to the environment, state water resources and federal natural resources, whose management has been delegated by the Union. IEMA's responsibilities are: implement the State Environmental and Water Resources Policies and the State Projects and Programmes for the sectors; create integrated planning of the environment and water resources, considering the provisions of federal plans, projects and programmes, including all public or private activities that are potentially polluting the environment; coordinate researches and projects in the environmental and water resources area, as well as elaborate environmental and water resources standards; authorize installation, operation of potentially polluting/degrading activities, in accordance with current legal and regulatory standards; coordinate environmental zoning researches, and establish environmental standards for the State territorial planning; support municipalities for an integrated management of the Environment and Water Resources; establish guidelines in a shared way with the State Secretariat of Education (SEDU) the technical and administrative activities of information, communication, social mobilization and other related to the State Environmental Education Policy; implement the State Information Systems for the Environment and Water Resources, etc. Full text Portuguese Website www3.al.es.gov.br References - Legislation Amended by Complementary Law No. 1.037 reorganizes the organizational structure of the State Secretariat for the Environment and Water Resources (SEAMA).
