Abstract

The Regulation provides for the specifications of genotype and phenotype of animal genes in Turkey, and for the rules and procedures to register and protect these specifications. A national committee has been set up to define principles, objectives and policies of gene protection and to conduct other related activities. The Committee is also authorized to make gene inventory and assess for endangered animal species. Details are given in the Regulation. The General Directorate of Agricultural Research acts as the secretariat of the Committee and is empowered with the issuing of the necessary measures to enable the protection and continuity of gene resources. Committee resolutions are transmitted to the Ministry and are in force following Ministry’s ratification. Exporting and research of protected genes by foreign individuals and companies are subject to permission of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs.
