Commission Recommendation No. 66 concerning a coordinated programme for the official control of foodstuffs Country/Territory European Union Document type Miscellaneous Date 2002 Source FAO, FAOLEX Original source Official Journal L 26, 30 January 2002, pp. 8-16 Subject Food & nutrition Keyword Food quality control/food safety Fruits/edible nuts Vegetables/legumes Beverages Genetically modified organism (GMO) Inspection Geographical area European Union Countries Abstract The Commission hereby recommends Member States to carry out inspections and controls, including the taking of samples and analysing such samples in laboratories, for the following purposes: (a) monitoring compliance with Community rules on labelling of certain foodstuffs that might contain ingredients, which may contain themselves, consist of or may be produced from genetically modified organisms (GMOs); (b) assessing the bacteriological safety of pre-cut fresh fruits and vegetables as well as of sprouted seeds; (c) assessing the bacteriological safety of fruit and vegetable juices. Foodstuffs intended for analysis should be submitted to laboratories in accordance with the provisions of article 3 of Directive 93/99/EEC. Four Annexes are attached to the Recommendation. Annex I describes the validated methods concerning analysis of foodstuffs for verifying compliance with labelling of GMOs hereby recommended by the Commission. Annex II lays down a recommended model to be followed in the labelling of genetically modified foodstuffs. Models concerning on the one hand bacteriological safety of pre-cut fresh fruits and vegetables and of sprouted seeds and, on the other hand, bacteriological safety of fruit and vegetable juices are given in Annexes III and IV respectively.
