Abstract

The purpose of the present Law is to implement the Directive 2000/60/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council establishing a framework for Community action in the field of water policy of 23 October 2000. In particular, the Law lays down provisions relating to water resources in the Land Brandenburg. Article 1 of the above-mentioned Law establishes that waters are to be conserved as part of the natural environment and living space for animals and plants. The task of the water resource management is to protect waters against pollution, to improve their general state and to monitor them. Waters are to be managed in such a way that they serve the well being of the community, but also of individuals, keeping in mind however the need of ensuring a sustainable development. The text consists of 154 articles divided into 15 Parts as follows: Introductory provisions (1); Water bodies (2); Protection of waters (3); Management of waters (4); Use of waters (5); Water supply and treatment of waste waters (6); Maintenance of waterworks (7); Waterworks and dams (8); Securing protection against flooding and providing related installations (9); Monitoring of waters (10); Competent authorities for waters, Water Resources Management Office, and competency (11); Administrative proceedings (12); Water Register (13); Penalties (14); Transitional and final provisions (15).
