The objective of the operations of the Border Guard is to ensure effective border management. In order to ensure effective border management, the Border Guard cooperates with other authorities. The Act also provides rules relative to the crossing of borders. A border zone may be established along the external border if this is necessary to maintain order along the border and to 14 ensure effective border management. The border zone may extend to a distance of at most three kilometres on land and at most four kilometres at sea from the Finnish national border referred to in international agreements binding on Finland. Further provisions on the establishment of a border zone, its width and location are laid down by Government decree.
