These Regulations implement provisions of the Biosafety Act, 2009 in relation to contained use of genetically modified organisms (GMO’s) that are controlled by specific measures. The objective of these Regulations is to ensure that potential adverse effects of GMO’s are addressed to protect human health and the environment when conducting contained use. The Regulations, among other things, define containment measures, which the implementation of which shall be ensured by the National Biosafety Authority, provide for classification of containment levels and require research institutions undertaking contained use activities to establish an Institutional Biosafety Committee. They also require the Authority to keep a register and provide with respect to emergency measures.
