Abstract

The purpose of the present Act is to reduce landfill waste and litter left on roads and in waterways, and to establish beverage container standards, Recycling Centres. The Act includes a deposit/refund system for soft drink, juice and alcohol containers; uniform labelling, size and type specifications. The text - consisting of 23 sections – deals, inter alia, with the following aspects: definition of terms, status of certain persons as retailer and distributor, exemptions, plan for refilling or recycling of beverage container, Plan for refilling or recycling of beverage container, returns of empty beverage containers, environmental fees and unclaimed deposits, payment into Environmental Trust fund, inspectors and offences and penalties.
