Abstract The present Law lays down provisions relating to forestry in the Free State of Bavaria. Forests have a special meaning for the protection of climate, water, air and soil, animals and plants, as well as for the landscape and its natural environment. They are an essential part of life and fulfil health, cultural, economic and social functions. Therefore, they are to be managed according to sustainable development principles. In particular, this Law shall promote the conservation and increase of forest areas, on the basis of the principle that “forests come before game”; moreover, the aim of the present Law is to strengthen the capacity of the forest’s protective and regenerative function; to secure and increase the production of wood and other natural goods through a sustainable development of forest management; to ensure the recreation facilities; to conserve the biological diversity of the forest and, if the need arises, to increase; the biological diversity; to support forestry owners in their aims as appropriate and, finally, to harmonize the interest of the public and the forest owners.
