Abstract

This Ordinance provides for matters relating to merchant shipping. The Government shall establish a Department of Shipping, a Mercantile Marine Office and Shipping offices in order to carry out the purposes of this Ordinance. Sections 98 to 102 make provisions on the employment of young persons and offences connected therewith. The Government may make rules regulating the engagement of seamen and on matters affecting maritime labour. Seamen need to be in possession of a Continuous Discharge Certificate to be employed. All Bangladesh ships shall have on board sufficient provisions and water, sufficient supply of medicines and, if the ship carries one hundred persons or more, a Medical Officer (sects. 181 to 186). Collision provisions are described in sections 362 to 368. Sections 386 to 399 provide for the registration and inspection of power driven sea-going fishing vessels. Sections 404 to 408 make provisions on sea-going sailing vessels.
