Abstract

This Act comprises 14 sections that outline restrictions and procedures for apiculture and sericulture, plus Schedule A that categorizes offences. The Act has procedural sections, the registration of bee-keepers (sect. 3) and the appointment, powers and duties of inspectors (sects. 6-8). It also concerns the prevention of the spread of pests, including mites, and disease among hives, through quarantine or the destruction of infected broods, hives and collateral equipment (sects. 4-6 and 8-12). The Provincial Apiarist ensures Act compliance, including, for example, annual registration, rearing queen bees and a prohibiting farmers from spreading substances harmful to bees, particularly when spraying fruit trees (sects. 3 and 11-12). The offences listed in Schedule A follow the Provincial Offences Procedure Act (sect. 13). The Lieutenant-Governor in Council may make regulations implementing the Act (sect. 14).
