Abstract

This Act lays down provisions on the establishment, powers and functions of the Antibiotics Control Committee; the restrictions on manufacture, importation, sales and transfer of antibiotics; the requirements and conditions for licensing to store antibiotics; the inspection of premises to ensure compliance with provisions of Act; taking samples of antibiotics; administering an antibiotic in any case of emergency; the identification marks or numbers on containers of antibiotics; the obligation of licence holders to keep records and the examination of these records; the list of approved pharmaceutical firms to be submitted by the Committee to the Minister; and offences and penalties. This Act underlines that antibiotics shall only be issued with the prescription of a medical practitioner, dentist or veterinary surgeon, and every prescription shall include the words “for animal treatment only” if given by a veterinary surgeon. Moreover, an importer of antibiotics may only sell or transfer any antibiotic to medical practitioner, dentist, veterinary surgeon or to any person who is the holder of a licence to store antibiotics granted under this Act.
