Abstract This Act, consisting of 7 Parts and three Schedules, concerns the protection of animals used for research purposes. For this purpose, all persons and organization involved in animal research or supplying animals for research purposes have to be duly authorised in compliance with the provisions of this Act. Under Part 2 the Animal Research Review Panel is established and its functions include: the investigation of matters relating to the conduct of animal research and the supply of animals for use in connection with animal research and the investigation of applications and complaints referred to it under this Act. Part 3 is dedicated to the constitution and operation of Animal Care and Ethics Committees and Part 4 covers in details issues related to accreditation and licensing. The Act contains provisions on its enforcement and on offences and penalties.
