Abstract

The purposes of this Act are to promote breed improvement and to protect persons who raise and purchase animals by providing for the establishment of animal pedigree associations that are authorized to register and identify animals that, in the opinion of the Minister, have significant value. The principal purpose of animal pedigree associations shall be the registration and identification of animals and the keeping of animal pedigrees. An association may be incorporated under this Act only if the Minister is satisfied that requirements set out in section 6, are met. An association may be incorporated in respect of a distinct breed only if the Minister is satisfied that the breed is a breed determined in accordance with scientific genetic principles. Other parts of this Act provide for structure and powers of associations (sects. 10 to 14), by-laws (sec 15 to 19), articles of incorporation (sect. 20 to 25), amalgamation of associations (sect. 26), registration of animals of a distinct breed in accordance with the by-laws of the association (sects. 27 to 29), characteristics of (pure-bred) animals (sects. 30 to 34), establishment of the Canadian Livestock Records Corporation, its purpose and structure (sects. 35 to 62), offences (sects. 63-67), and for existing associations (sects. 68 to 74).
