Abstract

These Regulations, made under Animal Diseases and Parasites Act, 1956, are instrumental in the prevention, control and eradication of animal disease and parasites by implementing a livestock identification and traceability system through requirements that create the capacity to trace the origin, movements and fate of designated animals, i.e. an animal of the species cattle, sheep, goats or pigs. A person who holds or keeps or proposes to hold or keep a designated animal on an establishment must notify the nearest State veterinarian on various specified matters. Upon notification , the State veterinarian shall register the establishment and allocate to the person in respect of the registered establishment a herd or flock identification code. A person may not use an establishment, whether a registered establishment or not, for an animal gathering unless the establishment is licensed for that purpose under these Regulations. An approval required for animal gatherings. The Regulations also provide for an animal identification system for designated animals (including imported animals) and provide for the control of movement of designated animals.
