Abstract

This chapter of the United States Code concerns animal health protection. It states that the prevention, detection, control, and eradication of diseases and pests of animals are essential to protect animal health; the health and welfare of the people of the United States; the economic interests of the livestock and related industries of the United States; the environment of the United States; and interstate commerce and foreign commerce of the United States in animals and other articles. The chapter further declares that the health of animals is affected by the methods by which animals and articles are transported in interstate commerce and foreign commerce, and the Secretary must continue to conduct research on animal diseases and pests that constitute a threat to the livestock of the United States. The chapter further regulates import and export; interstate movement; seizure, quarantine, and disposal; inspections, seizures, and warrants; detection, control, and eradication of diseases and pests; animal disease prevention and management; veterinary accreditation program; penalties and enforcement; authorization of appropriations; veterinary training; surveillance of zoonotic diseases; expansion of Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service activities; the Pest and Disease Response Fund; and the national aquatic animal health plan.
