Abstract

These Regulations are issued under article 14 of the Animal Health Law of 2001-2003 so as to alight the Cypriot legislative framework with Council Directive 2003/85/EC on Community measures for the control of foot-and-mouth disease. Aim of the Regulations is to set forth (a) the minimum control measures to be applied in the event of an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease of whatever type of virus; and (b) certain preventive measures aimed at increasing awareness and preparedness of the competent authorities and the farming community for foot-and-mouth disease. The Regulations provide, among others, for suspicion, notification and investigation of the disease and measures applying following confirmation of the disease applying also to edible products such as meat and milk. They also provide for protection and surveillance zones around infected premises in case of an outbreak. A number of Annexes setting out detailed procedures and technical guidelines are attached herewith.
