S24 enters on 26 October 2003 (automatic commencement under AIA s 15DA(2) (2002 SL No. 276 s 2)). Abstract The Act consists of 9 Chapters divided into 218 sections and completed by one Schedule. Preliminary, codes of practice, general animal offences, using animals for scientific purposes, code compliance monitoring, investigation and enforcement, evidence and legal proceedings, general provisions. The Act aims also at providing standards for the care and use of animals. Basic provisions on animal welfare are set in chapter 2, while detailed provisions are to be specified y regulation. The use of animals for scientific purposes is regulated under chapter 4 and has to comply with the Australian Code of Practice for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes. Provisions for the monitoring and enforcement of the Act, and of related legislation, are provided for in chapters 5 and 6. Chapter 7 deals with evidence and legal proceedings. The powers and duties of inspectors are specified and so are the offences and penalties to be applied. Chapter 9 concerns transitional provision for Primary Industries Legislation Amendment Act 2006.
