Abstract This Guideline of the Water Resources Protection amends the document of 2011. Its purpose is to evaluate the problems related to water sector (water shortage, including scarcity, quality deterioration, salinity due to depletion of groundwater, and consequences of urbanization) in order to protect and conserve the water resources. It proposes two main strategies (i) optimal management and (ii) maximizing benefits. These guidelines divide the protection zones for water resources in (i) groundwater and (ii) surface water, and indicate activities allowed in the different protection zones. The protection zones for the groundwater are determined respect to the depth of the water source (well/spring). While for the surface water, the zones are determined based on the surface that circulates dams, wadis, canals, and the guidelines indicate the activities allowed in the different protection zones.
