Abstract

The purpose of the present Human Rights Act is to provide Albertans with protection of their human rights. The Alberta Human Rights Commission administers the Act. The Act allows people to make a complaint to the Commission if they feel that they have experienced harassment or have been discriminated against in the specific areas and under the specific grounds protected under the Act. The aim of the Commission’s complaint resolution process is to return the complainant to the position he or she would have been in if the discrimination or harassment had not occurred. Section 15 establishes that the Alberta Human Rights and Citizenship Commission is continued under the name “Alberta Human Rights Commission” and consists of the members appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council. Functions of the Commission are, inter alia, to: i) promote an environment in which all Albertans can participate in and contribute to the cultural, social, economic and political life of Alberta; ii) research, develop and conduct educational programs designed to eliminate discriminatory practices related to race, religious beliefs, gender, gender identity, gender expression. The text consists of 45 sections.
