This Act entered into force on 28 October 2006.
Abstract

This Act sets out the legislative framework on safety of food and nutrition according to the Regulation (EC) No. 178/2002 of the European Parliament and of the Council laying down the general principles and requirements of food law, establishing the European Food Safety Authority and laying down procedures in matters of food safety. This Act establishes: (1) sanitary requirements not covered in regulations of the European Union; (2) hygienic conditions to be fulfilled by foodstuffs as well as materials and products intended to come into contact with food; (3) competences of institutions responsible for the official control of food, pursuant to the Regulation (EC) No. 882/2004 of the European Parliament and of the Council on official controls performed to ensure the verification of compliance with feed and food law, animal health and animal welfare rules; (4) provisions on food inspection not covered in the Regulation No. 882/2004. The consolidated Act is composed of the following Sections: General provisions and definitions (Sec. 1); Sanitary and labelling requirements for food (Sec. 2); Food and nutrition of children and youth in units of the education system (Sec. 2a); Materials and products intended to come into contact with food (Sec. 3); Hygienic requirements (Sec. 4); Official controls of food (Sec. 5); Institutions and cooperation in the area of food safety (Sec. 6); Liability for harms caused by foodstuffs (Sec. 7); Criminal provisions and penalties (Sec. 8); Amendments to provisions in force, transitional and final provisions (Sec. 9).
