This Act entered into force on 2 June 2000.
Abstract

The present Act lays down provisions related to the implementation of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). It applies to international trade in animals and plants covered by the Agreement. Authorisation from the relevant authority is required for for trade in animals or plants covered by this Act. To promote the implementation of the Act, Article 4 mandates the adoption of general provisions on different topics, including trade in animals and plants; import, export and re-export licenses and certificates of import from the sea; trade in animals and plants with non-Parties; government monitoring of compliance with the law; treatment of live animals; etc. These regulations shall be set within six months from the entry into force of this Act. Provisions on offences and penalties are also included.
