Abstract

The purpose of this Act is to promote the protection of Breiðafjörður, in particular the landscape, geological formations, ecosystems and cultural monuments. The provisions of the law apply to all islands, islets and skerries in Breiðafjörður as well as indicated shores in the inner part of the fjord. The Act establishes a Committee (Breiðafjarðarnefnd) to advise on all matters relating to the implementation of this Act. The Committee shall also, in consultation with the municipalities, elaborate a protection plan stating how the objectives set by the protection of the area are to be achieved. The Executive shall issue a regulation providing for protection measures on the basis of the Act, protection against any kind of pollution and access for tourists to certain places in the area that are sensitive to nature.
