Abstract The present Act establishes the Marine and Freshwater Research Institute (MFRI), an independent research and advisory institute providing scientific advise based on its research on marine and freshwater resources and the environment. The purpose of the Act is o strengthen scientific knowledge of the environment and living resources in the sea and freshwater and at the same time promote the sustainable and profitable use of the resources. The Act contains rules on the appointment of the director, the composition of the advisory committee, the role of the MFRI, its collaboration with universities and research institutes and funding, among other things.
