Abstract The present Act contains provisions on the control of the production, manufacturing, labelling and marketing of organically produced products as specified in the following EU legislation: Council Regulation (EC) No. 834/2007 on organic production and labelling of organic products and repealing Regulation (EEC) No. 2092/91 and Commission Regulation (EC) No. 889/2008 laying down detailed rules for the implementation of Council Regulation (EC) No. 834/2007. The Act mandates the Government to establish a control system in accordance with the provisions of this Act to protect the production of organic products. This system will be concerned with the supervision of production methods and the labelling of food. Only agricultural commodities covered by the control system's register on organic production may be marketed as organically produced. The Act lays down detailed rules on the control organs; application for authorization to market agricultural products as organically produced; the control register; offences and penalties; etc. More detailed rules on the enforcement and implementation of this Act shall be laid down by the Government if necessary.
